Byron Wallen's Hurricane Bells
post-bop contemporary jazz spiritual jazz
Influences: Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Ornette Coleman
Byron Wallen leads a quintet through an ambitious original composition responding to artist Peter Shenai's Hurricane Bells—sculptures modeled on Hurricane Katrina's structure that produce complex, resonant tones. This is socio-political jazz rooted in memorial and community gathering, where Wallen's trumpet navigates intricate harmonic landscapes alongside vibraphone, guitar, bass and drums to explore the infrastructural and governmental failures that compounded the storm's devastation.
Personnel:
Byron Wallen (trumpet)
Jonny Mansfield (vibraphone)
Daniel Kempshell (guitar)
Menelick Claffey (bass)
Zoe Pascal (drums)
