Richard Spaven
hip-hop jazz fusion contemporary jazz
Influences: Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette
Richard Spaven is a drummer who commands the intersection of jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music, using the kit as a tool for textural and rhythmic innovation. His groove-first approach—honed through collaborations with Loyle Carner, Jordan Rakei, and Alfa Mist—foregrounds pocket and feel, where rhythm dictates harmony and timbre sculpts arrangement. As a bandleader and composer on his Edition Records debut Light of Day, Spaven brings elastic, deliberate touch and contemporary sensibility to his own material.
