The Flame
post-bop free jazz contemporary jazz
Influences: Keith Jarrett, Evan Parker, Bill Evans
The Flame is a piano trio built on fearless collective improvisation, with Robert Mitchell's award-winning compositional voice anchoring sessions that range from lyrical introspection to abstract exploration. Mitchell is a Guildhall professor and Steinway artist who's also a published poet and author, bringing literary sensibility to the music; Brice and Hunter are among London's most inventive improvisers, equally comfortable with both structured composition and open-ended dialogue. Their two acclaimed live albums on 577 Records capture a band that treats each performance as a unique document of three musicians listening intently to one another.
