The Pocket Ellington
swing post-bop
Influences: Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus
Pianist Alex Webb's septet reconstructs the sound of Duke Ellington's orchestra using just four horns and a rhythm section, performing classic arrangements from the 1930s–1950s alongside works by Mingus, Monk, and Gil Evans. With a top-drawer horn section anchored by veteran bassist Dave Green and drummer Winston Clifford, the band delivers a full, swinging sound that captures Ellington's era while giving each musician solo space within carefully crafted new arrangements.
