Paul G. Smyth
free jazz post-bop contemporary jazz
Influences: Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Keith Jarrett
Paul G. Smyth is a pianist whose approach to improvisation is utterly original, combining abstract harmonic thinking with rhythmic invention across multiple collaborations with free jazz luminaries including Peter Brötzmann, Charles Gayle, and Wadada Leo Smith. Tonight he performs with violist Benedict Taylor and guitarist Daniel Thompson in a new trio formation, followed by his long-standing unit with bassist John Edwards and drummer Mark Sanders—a partnership making what has been called the music of an awakened universe for over a decade.
